Warne’s ‘Tornado’ - Kamran Khan to play for Pune in IPL 4

Shane Warne’s discovery in the Indian Premier League, fast bowler Kamran Khan, will play for the Sahara Pune Warriors in the fourth season of the cash—rich Twenty20 league.

“I have signed the contract with Pune. I will miss Shane (Warne) but I guess a new team will provide me the opportunity to play more matches,” Khan told ‘PTI Bhasha’ from Mumbai.

Having impressed Darren Berry, the Rajasthan Royals director of coaching, in a suburban Twenty20 tournament, Khan was given a contract worth about USD 24,000 with Rajasthan for the second season of the IPL. Captain and Coach Warne called him a ‘Tornado’ and used him as a front—line bowler.

Khan, in fact, made his Twenty20 debut before having played a first—class match. Khan too acknowledges the contribution of Warne in building up his career.

“I will not forget what Shane has done for me. Whatever I am today is because of him. He is a tremendous captain and a good human being,” he said.

Khan could play only three matches in the IPL third season due to his knee injury.

“I am fit now and raring to perform. I have several new weapons in my armoury. I could not play much matches in last season but this time I will prove my mettle for sure,” said the 20—year—old son of a woodcutter from Azamgarh, UP.

Khan said he is excited about playing alongside Yuvraj Singh whom he admire a lot.

“I met him many times during IPL but now I am playing with him. I am really excited about this opportunity,” he said.

Government Expects over Rs 300 crore As Tax From IPL 4

Government is expected to collect more than Rs 300 crore in taxes from the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League T20 cricket tournament which will begin in April this year.

According to sources, the taxes would be obtained as Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) from the remuneration paid to players, umpires, coaches, commentators among others under the I-T category while advertising, marketing and consultancy services will be taxed under the service tax bracket.

As per an estimate calculated by the Revenue department, the IPL will fetch about Rs 150 crore each under the direct (income tax) and indirect (service tax) categories.

The T20 tournament is being played from April 8 to May 22 in various Indian cities with foreign and domestic players being paid large amounts of money. Almost 60 matches would be played in the fourth edition of the tournament.
IPL-4
The latest edition is coming at a time when the earlier versions of the T20 tournament are being probed by agencies like I-T department and Enforcement Directorate for "taxation aspects of transactions relating to the IPL" including the flow of money from offshore destinations into the tournament.

The government had received Rs 91 crore as taxes under the TDS category from the IPL's first edition, while the second edition which was hosted in South Africa had fetched the department "few crores" as income tax.

The third edition brought about Rs 400 crore under TDS category for the government.

The Revenue department expects a rise in taxes this year following a last year I-T department order which had termed the BCCI a commercial organisation and not a charitable one and also a notification in 2008 had brought sports-persons under the professionals category.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has filed an appeal against the I-T order.

Under the service tax category, advertising, marketing and consultancy services are taxed, the official said.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) notification in 2008 had expanded the scope of 'professionals' under the Income Tax Act, 1961 which included sports-persons, umpires, referees, coaches, trainers, team physicians and physiotherapists, event managers, commentators, anchors and sports columnists.

The notification categorised their services as 'professional services.' Such services are taxed in accordance with Section 194J of the I-T Act.

I will miss Chennai and Dhoni: Muralitharan

Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan says he will miss his previous IPL team Chennai Super Kings and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni but is excited to play for Kochi franchisee, the new entrants in the Twenty20 league.

Muralitharan, who had played a crucial role in CSK's title-triumph in IPL 3 and Champions League last year, was been signed up by team Kochi for $1.1 million at the two-day auction in Bangalore.

"I played with them for three years and have several happy memories with the team. My wife is also from Chennai and she is upset with this change but it happens in the game. I will miss Chennai, my teammates and miraculous captain Dhoni," Muralitharan said.

"Chennai had the excellent captain, a wonderful team and tremendous support. We enjoyed playing for them and last year was memorable in which we won the IPL and Champions league. I have taken a lot of wickets for them," said the veteran, who has 515 ODI and 800 Test wickets in his kitty.

"Kochi is a new venture and we will have new captain and new targets. I am quite excited about this. We will start afresh and try to give our best. I hope to have home like atmosphere in Kochi as well. I hope that people will understand my language (Tamil) in Kochi also," he added.

The spin wizard, who took 40 wickets in 40 matches for Chennai in last three seasons, said he wants to extend his IPL career for a few more years.

"I want to play IPL for the next two or three more years. I will try to perform with best of my abilities and experience. Team Kochi has put so much faith on me and I will not disappoint them," said the ace off spinner,

Talking about Kochi's combination of players, Muralitharan said they need some more young Indian guns.

"Kochi has experienced players like Mahela Jayawardhane, Brendon McCullum, VVS Laxman and Sreesanth. Now it is necessary to have some talented Indian youngsters," he said.

When asked about now CSK spinner Suraj Randiv's wish to learn the art of Doosra from him, the ace bowler said that he is willing to share his experience with the young bowlers.

"Suraj is a good bowler and future of Sri Lanka Cricket. Definitely I will give him important tips. Rather than the franchise, he is the one who will be benefited by playing for them. I am willing to share my experience and knowledge with everyone," said Murali.

Asked about his future plans, he said, "You don't know what is there in store for you. I will be involved with cricket for sure but not as a coach with any national team. May be at a shorter scale."

Talking about the snub the IPL franchisees meted out to Saurav Ganguly and Sanath Jayasuriya, he said, "This is franchise's decision. I don't know what is their thinking and calculations. I am also surprised but they are great players and will remain that."

Muralitharan, who quit Test cricket in July 2010, said it is his dream that bids adieu to ODI cricket with another World Cup Trophy in his hands.

"We are playing in the sub-continent. India will be the hot favourites but Sri Lanka is also a good team and we have played well recently. I hope that we can win the tournament which is my last one.

"I am happy that my name is there in the team. I want to bid adieu with the title triumph. I consider myself lucky as I was the part of 1996 winning team also," he said.

Adam Gilchrist to captain Kings XI Punjab :

Adam Gilchrist, the first kind Australian wicketkeeper, will be the captain associated with Kings XI Punjab for that 4th season of the IPL, the Punjab trainer Michael Bevan has stated. Bevan stated Punjab purchased Gilchrist, that led Hyderabad to the prize in the IPL’s second season, specifically for his leadership abilities. Gilchrist had been bought about the very first day of the actual auction for $900,000

“The major reason all of us selected him had been because he is the chief,” Bevan, who had been appointed Punjab coach four times before the auction, stated. He or she also brushed apart any fears of type or even health and fitness issues Gilchrist might have thinking about he’s the second earliest player within the IPL at Thirty-nine years. “Even if he isn’t in the peak of his career, I still feel like a leader he has a lot to provide. Within Twenty20 cricket you are not requesting the actual guy in order to hit from A hundred and twenty within the opening placement. You’re requesting guys in order to strike from 140 or even 150 and Gilly may be the kind of participant who are able to submit three or four match-winning performances over the period.”
